Hydrogen at the Research Frontier:
Innovations and Emerging Breakthroughs

Hydrogen is a central pillar of the energy transition, with a growing role in industrial decarbonisation, clean transport, energy system integration, and long-term energy diversity, resilience, and security. Across Europe and beyond, major public and private efforts are being deployed to accelerate the market uptake of hydrogen technologies. However, the strength and durability of this transition will ultimately depend upon research and innovation to address unresolved challenges and to open up new technological pathways. 

Important progress is still required in areas such as efficiency, durability, cost competitiveness, materials sustainability, system flexibility, manufacturability, infrastructure development, and integration into real operating systems and environments. At the same time, emerging scientific and technological advances are creating new opportunities in hydrogen production, conversion, storage, transport, digitalisation, intelligent system management, and advanced materials and components. 

In this context, the EFCH2 2026 plenary session brings together key representatives of leading research, industrial, policy and innovation frameworks shaping the hydrogen landscape in Europe and internationally.  

The objective of the plenary session is to discuss where the real hydrogen research frontier lies today, which innovation priorities are emerging as most relevant for the years ahead, and how research, industry, public strategies,infrastructure development and international cooperation can work together to accelerate impact. By combining European and global perspectives, the plenary will offer a forward-looking reflection on the breakthroughs, priorities and collaborative directions that may define the next phase of hydrogen and fuelcells in a clean energy economy.

Hydrogen Skills for Europe: Building Competences, Industrial Capacity and a Coordinated Ecosystem for theEnergy Transition& Award Ceremony

The rapid development of the hydrogen economy is generating an increasing demand for highly skilled professionals across the entire value chain, including research, engineering, manufacturing, system integration, operations, safety, certification and policy support. At the same time, Europe is facing a significant challenge in structuring coordinated and effective educational, training and reskilling initiatives capable of supporting the deployment of hydrogen technologies at industrial scale.

This special session aims to bring together key European initiatives, institutions, industrial actors and research organizations working on hydrogen-related skills development in order to discuss current gaps, future needs and possible coordination mechanisms at European level.

The session will focus on the role of large-scale industrial and research initiatives, European training programmes, research networks and emerging alliances dedicated to hydrogen competences andworkforce development.

The objective is to move beyond fragmented initiatives and foster a more structured, coordinated andlong-term European approach to hydrogen skills development, capable of supporting industrial competitiveness, innovation capacity and the large-scale deployment of hydrogen technologies.

The session is expected to combine short keynote interventions with an interactive round table discussion involving representatives from academia, industry, European projects and policy initiatives

‍Authors and presenters are invited to present their activities and results.

WHERE
Poster Session will be organized in the "Gazebo Room" of the Grand Hotel Quisisana. The "Gazebo Room" is also the place where all the coffee break will be served so above the slots dedicated to the poster sessions, the authors have the chance to present their poster also during these networking moments.

POSTER SESSION 1: September 15^th from 16.00h to 18.00h*
POSTER SESSION 2: September 16^th from 16.00h to 18.00h*
POSTER SESSION 3: September 17^th from 10.30h to 12.00h**

*For these sessions, authors are invited to be present beside their poster to share the contents with the attendees.

**Author's participations is optional and discretional.

SET UP
The Set up of the posters will be possible:
- September 14^th from 14.00h to 18.00h
- September 15^th from 08.00h to 10.00h
Note:
As mentioned above the poster session will be organized in the coffee break area.
The first coffee break of the event is scheduled for September 15^th at 10.30h. If authors will be able to set up their posters within this hour it would be much appreciated.

TECHNICAL INFO
The posters will be placed on selfdstanding panels with a total surface of 95cm x 235 cm. The max dimensions of the poster are 90cm x 230cm.

Out staff will offer support during the set up process providing the materials required to hang the posters on the panels.
